Weird Scholarship Wednesday: "What's in a Name?"




Every Wednesday, we celebrate YOUR diversity and uniqueness. We (almost) guarantee that we will find a scholarship that matches your weird, uncommon and possibly bizarre hobbies, dreams, aspirations and skills! If you are classically trained in the keytar, want to major in crytozoology, or can make the meanest nutria stew this side of the Mason-Dixon line, Weird Scholarship Wednesday is ALL ABOUT YOU.





Zolp Scholarships: Loyola University in Chicago provides full tuition for four years to students who are Catholic and whose last name is Zolp. 

Scarpinato Scholarships: Texas A&M pays full cost of attendance for anyone whose last name is Scarpinato by birth or marriage. 


Gatling Scholarships: The John Gatling Grant provides scholarships for students at North Carolina State University who were born with a surname of Gatling or Gatlin. The scholarship provides up to $9,000 for in-state students and $18,000 for out-of-state students.


Harvard University has several scholarships based on the student's last name, including Baxendale, Hudson, Thayer, Downer, Bright.


The Van Valkenburg Memorial Scholarship awards $1,000 to a descendant (by birth or legal adoption) of Lambert and Annetje Van Valkenburg, who emigrated in 1643. Variations in the surname Van Valkenburg are acceptable, including Van Valkenburg, Van Valkenburgh, Van Volkinburg, Van Falkenburg, Valkenburg, Vollick, and Van Velkinburgh.


Hamilton College offers a scholarship established by Elias W. Leavenworth in 1882. It is awarded to students with the name of Leavenworth.
 



Vassar College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, provides full scholarships to students who can prove they are descendants of an 1800's benefactor, Calvin Huntington - or who are willing to change their middle name to his last name.

Tea USA's "Sip of a Lifetime" VIDEO contest (how cool is THAT?!) offers an six week international internship to one college student or recent graduate. The lucky student will study all aspects of tea cultivation, processing and appreciation! Visit TeaUSA  for more information!

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS (IAAP), SPARTANBURG CHAPTER

The Spartanburg Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) was founded in 1948, and has 35 members. It was organized to promote professionalism and networking among administrative professionals and office support staff. Members may have Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) and/or Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) rating(s). Professional and/or personal development programs are offered at monthly meetings, as well as 4 mini-seminars throughout the year.

Annual scholarship awarded to an aspiring student at Spartanburg Community College.

Weird Scholarship Wednesday: Priests, Beasts and Silk Pajamas

The Michigan Llama Association Scholarship aims to offset some of the college costs by awarding one member, or the child of a member, a $500 scholarship. The award can be renewed up to three times during the recipient’s higher education career. For more information contact the Michigan Llama Association.
